election linkfest 2: environment
First, a good resource I found: Red, Green, and Blue is dedicated to environmental politics, with sources defined as from left, right, or center. Here are some other stories I found worthwhile:
- Update: 61 Nobel laureates endorse Obama's science policy.
- Both candidates answers to 14 science-related questions at ScienceDebate 2008.
- Treehugger has several multi-page comparisons of the candidates on environmental issues, with lots of quotes. Here are the concluding pages on nuclear energy, offshore drilling, and renewable energy.
- Speaking of renewable energy...McCain missed eight votes in a year on a renewable energy bill (RGB and NYT). The last time was in December, and "The motion failed by one vote. McCain absence was especially astonishing considering he was already in Washington." Meanwhile, the League of Conservation Voters refutes a current McCain ad, and notes he has failed to support incentives for clean technology as a Senator.
- I wrote about the Bush Administration's latest attack on the Endangered Species Act. Obama spoke out against it. McCain was silent, and has a poor voting record on the ESA.
- Palin's abysmal environmental record, op-ed by University of Alaska prof (Seattle PI).
- Palin's wolf killing program (Salon). Last year, 172 scientists signed a letter to Palin, expressing concern about the lack of science behind the state's wolf-killing operation.
- By promoting development in Wasilla, Palin has "fouled her own nest", lives on a dead lake that's a runway for float planes (Salon).
- Palin doesn't know (or purposely mis-stated) how much energy her own state produces (FactCheck.org).
- Obama is endorsed by the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters (who give the top ten reasons to vote Obama), Defenders of Wildlife, Environment America, and the U.S. Humane Society.
