Late last year, I lamented that our yard list (birds seen in and from the property) was stuck at 129, with 2005 being the first year we had not recorded any new species. This weekend we had two! On Saturday, in the foggy morning, we heard the call of a Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) and looked up to see one flying towards the river near our subdivision, where they can sometimes be found during migration. Last evening, we were sitting on the patio and I heard the wing-whistling of an American Woodcock (Scolopax minor) which took off from the edge of the back garden to fly off over our heads (you'll recall they are a favorite of ours). Two new birds, both shorebirds! I would have expected our next bird to be a Bald Eagle, because they have been seen along the river in our area. We'll see what else fall migration brings.

If trades were possible, I would give you one of my Bald Eagles. I had three together a few days ago: one chasing what I think was an interloper, the third just following behind (kinda like the kid in middle school who wont fight but loves to watch!). I should keep a yard list, I guess. I had a Golden Eagle on move-in day...

Woodcocks were beloved birds for my parents. My father made a picture of one entitled "Bzeep means 'I Love You'" and gave it to my mother when I was young.

That's a great yard list. I wish I had a yard so I could keep such a list. My street list is 22.
